The excellent Jazz in Britain label continues to unearth nuggets from UK jazz history - May of this year saw the release of an album collecting for the first time ever, the complete recording sessions for the Spotlite vinyl album ‘Fingers Remember Mingus’ expanded with bonus tracks. The original album sessions, and the extra tracks, were all recorded between 1979 and 1983. Featured music on the show is by Charles Mingus and Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker and is interpreted by a great band put together by bassist Dave Green. In addition there’s a focus on Daniel Carter with his latest release and some older material with Patrick Golden and Jim Clouse. The show also includes some great new releases and a fascinating solo piece by Camila Nebbia.

The featured album on this edition is from Guitarist Miles Okazaki who gathers an extraordinary cast of ten musicians to create Miniature America,  a collection of 22 vignettes exploring the wonder of chance encounters and “found” compositions. I am featuring four of these pieces. The rest of the show includes brand new releases of both studio and live albums from Aurora Nealand, Mark Helias, Tim Berne, Brasstactics, Chris McDonald Jazz Orchestra, Devin Daniel, Ivo Perelman, Kim Cass,  Lucian Ban, Mat Maneri, Natsuki Tamura & Satoko Fuji, Nick Rosario,Paula Maya, Frank Paul Schubert, Michel Pilz, Stefan Scheib, and Klaus Kugel.

Jazz has been around long enough to allow for a massive library of ground breaking legacy music to build up. Current musicians often look back at that legacy, sometimes they use it, sometimes they build upon it and add a current perspective. In this way jazz is allowed to grow and develop whilst remaining true to the work of the innovators who went before. This selection of new releases and classic tracks is perhaps a little more eclectic than usual. There are a variety of genres on show with Lulaworld Records contributing an excellent set of releases. There’s also a focus on the Snarski Brothers and other Australian sounds including Ben Corbett’s new band with their stunning new album.
