Dean established his reputation as a member of the Keith Tippett Sextet from 1968 to 1970, and in Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972. He also had a successful solo career as well as many collaborations and guest appearances. His discography includes well over 100 albums. This episode includes a selection of examples of his work.’

The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an avant-garde jazz group that grew out of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the late 1960s. The ensemble integrates many jazz styles and plays many instruments, including "little instruments" and various forms of percussion. On this show there is a small selection of music from over 50 releases by the group.

The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz ensemble, originally made up of saxophonist John Tchicai, trombonist Roswell Rudd, drummer Milford Graves and bassist Lewis Worrell, that came into existence in 1964 in New York City and initially lasted for just over a year. Worrell was replaced by Reggie Workman in 1965. Louis Moholo replaced Graves for a European Tour in 1965 with bassist Finn Von Eyben standing in for Workman. On this show music from their short lived career interspersed with cuts from some of the band members.
