On this show a focus on a couple of musical acquaintances of mine - Tamsin Middleton aka Vice Vera (Mr Heart, AAAK, Liines) and Steve Simms-Luddington (Monkeys In Love, Royal Catastrophe) who is calling himself Russell for a series of multi-named releases. Also I have the brand new album from Dave Graney and Clare Moore plus the new albums I have been featuring lately and also some selections from the archive to make the mix a little more eclectic.

This week I focus on a new release from the excellent Jazz In Britain label. The Progress Box Set from Gordon Beck’s Gyroscope is a compilation of studio, live, radio and rehearsal session recordings from the tape archives of Ron Mathewson and Gordon. The release provides a chronological audio history of Gyroscope’s formation and development, indeed their ‘Progress’. I am featuring three tracks from the release. In addition there is a selection of other new releases including three new albums from ECM.

A lot of the music on this show is from Brisbane but in equal measure we travel the globe for a cross section of some of the best new Different Noises around. There is everything from indie pop, via post-rock, through improvisation to sludge metal. Variety is, of course, the spice of life.

With over 1,000 new releases being sent my way, or purchased, this year it has been difficult to keep a perspective on the year as it has been generally very good indeed. As I turn my mind to the inevitable “end of year” lists I wonder if it is going to be possible to narrow down so many releases - perhaps it ought to be an artists/labels of the year list? - this might give me the flexibility I need. This selection is no exception with a variety of genres and styles in play all of which could be well placed in any such list.
