This weeks batch of new releases include a more than usual amount of guitar music. With new albums from Mike Stern, Brad Shepik, Tim Brady, Eldritch Priest, and Peter Bernstein, plus two new singles from Ari Joshua, there are more than enough examples of guitar music to keep six-string fans engaged. In addition there is an excellent range of new releases featuring a variety of musical combinations and a previously unheard recording of the legendary Charlie Parker.

There’s some classic tracks from the archive and more tracks from my selection of recent releases. To mark the sad passing of Keo Martin there are two singles from his band Longsight.

The Different Noises manifesto is in full effect here with a wide variety of genres in play. Not that these definitions really help in describing what is presented. There’s a nice balance of old and new material. The ever busy Neon Kittens are yet again a focus.

The title of Art Hirahara’s new release embraces the spirit of jazz. Music made in good company with musicians interacting to create something special. Two new albums from ground-breaking saxophonist Ivo Perelman reflect this approach as well as the creation of music which pushes at boundaries. Other brand new releases from 2024 make up the rest of the show apart from a coda of two great tracks from Miles Davis electric period in 1969-1970. Included in the show is music from:

There is in equal measure a selection of accessible new pop/indie/punk rock, and, more out-there stuff in this collection. Some older stuff also comes into the mix There is no design in this, it’s just what comes in, and the aim of creating a varied listening experience. The featured band is Australian duo Party Dozen who tick every box for me. Includes music from:

ECM records continue to release an eclectic range of remarkable music which transcends narrow genre classifications and offers the listener the chance to explore new sounds and experiences. Four excellent new releases from that label are featured on this episode. In addition there is a fascinating and varied mix of new releases yet again proving that Jazz is a broad church. I close the show with an excellent live recording from the legendary Wayne Shorter from the first in a series of new live albums celebrating the great man. Featuring:

The sad recent passing of Martin Phillips of The Chills warranted a tribute so I have selected music from three of their albums. A cult band in the truest sense of that description they were the early instigators of the Dunedin sound which has been argued was the birthplace of indie rock. The rest of the show is an eclectic mix of new releases, classic tracks and some rarities from my hard disc and CD collection. Featured artists:

An eclectic mix of new music this week with guitars and pianos featuring. This international mix of music also introduces a band that describe themselves as “minimalist rock” but whose compositions are influenced by bands that merged rock and jazz in their output. Tekrar Eden, from Sheffield U.K. offer a fresh perspective to the music.

To some degree what goes into these shows is down to what is sent my way by the lovely people that promote music. The random nature of those submissions allows me to meet the Different Noises agenda and demonstrate the variety of music that is out there. If you read the mainstream press then you would think that music is in the hands of Swift, Sheeran and their ilk, when in reality there is a vast amount of excellent music, far better than the aforementioned produce I reckon. So, here’s a selection that demonstrates variety, mostly new, some re-released, and my own particular obsessions. As Ann-Marie sings in The Speed of Sound tracks “Can You Hear The Unheard Music” - yes you can on this show!
