“Pop Music” need not be obvious, safe, boring or trite. It should be unexpected, challenging, dangerous, and original. It should challenge your perceptions. This weeks selection does the latter - indeed if we are dealing in antonyms perhaps we should describe it as unpopular music - but that perhaps has all the wrong connotations. This music is from the edges, the nether regions of the music world. You won’t see it bothering the mainstream. It is exciting, fresh, novel, innovative, provocative, unconventional, and, it inspires. A little like hearing “Virginia Plain” by Roxy Music when you were mired in a world of Led Zeppelin and thinking “Hey! That’s Different?”.

It begins with rhythmically driven Latin jazz and piano-led ensemble work, followed by experimental compositions using layered electronics, extended techniques, and non-standard forms. Midway, the programme includes modal structures, bowed string textures, and vibraphone-led chamber jazz. The final third presents free improvisation, large ensemble writing, and live recordings with shifting metre and phrasing. This episode brings together a wide range of experimental, ambient, and progressive sounds - a mix built around mood and texture rather than genre. It opens with Unsafe At Any Speed by Orcutt, Shelley, and Miller—an improvised collision of guitar, percussion, and electronics—then moves through cello minimalism (Kirin McElwain), post-rock layering (Tortoise), and gamelan-inspired textures (Bill Brennan & Andy McNeil). Electronic and ambient works dominate the middle stretch: Ro(b)//ert Lundberg’s modular abstractions, Kali Malone & Drew McDowall’s drone collaboration, and Troth’s reworking of Cold Hands Warm Heart. There’s also dubwise pop from Rob Smith & Ammoye, and contemporary classical from Eydís Evensen. Later selections include Eddodi surrealism, lo-fi country deconstruction , and archival material from The Go-Betweens. Peter Hammill appears in three forms solo , in duet with Roger Eno , and in progressive collaboration with Isildur’s Bane. The mix is loosely themed around dislocation, memory, and sonic instability, although this was not a deliberate programming decision, it just came together that way.
