On her new album Run the Gauntlet, Kris Davis pays tribute to six remarkable women pianists who have provided inspiration and support over the course of her own journey in music: Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Marilyn Crispell, Angelica Sanchez, Sylvie Courvoisier and Renee Rosnes. I’m featuring a track from the Davis album plus a selection of music from the six women. In addition there’s music from other new releases including a couple of tracks from the new album from Pericopes +1 featuring Emi Vernizzi, Ruben Bellavia, and, Claud Vignalli.

One of the most exciting bands to emerge from Australia in recent years is the post-Drones band Tropical Fuck Storm who are Gareth Liddiard, Fiona Kitschin, Lauren Hammel and Erica Dunn. A new live album is coming in September and I preview a track from that as well as including music from each of the band members prior projects. In addition a tsunami of new releases, some classics from the archives and a small dollop of weirdness.

There was a paucity of new releases this week so as well as the new releases I delved into the hard drive to select a handful of favourites from over the years, a couple of which we had a hand in/or will be releasing via German Shepherd Records/Half Edge Records. The new stuff, what there is of it, is very interesting and varied. Featured artists:

The excellent Jazz in Britain label continues to unearth nuggets from UK jazz history - May of this year saw the release of an album collecting for the first time ever, the complete recording sessions for the Spotlite vinyl album ‘Fingers Remember Mingus’ expanded with bonus tracks. The original album sessions, and the extra tracks, were all recorded between 1979 and 1983. Featured music on the show is by Charles Mingus and Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker and is interpreted by a great band put together by bassist Dave Green. In addition there’s a focus on Daniel Carter with his latest release and some older material with Patrick Golden and Jim Clouse. The show also includes some great new releases and a fascinating solo piece by Camila Nebbia.
